Wilhelm and Karl Maybach did not just build engines. They established an entire philosophy of engineering excellence that Mercedes-Benz would later acquire and carry forward into the 21st century. Today, Maybach.com serves as the digital home for the House of Maybach — a multifaceted luxury ecosystem encompassing the Maybach Penthouse experience, Mercedes-Maybach automotive partnership, Maybach Icons of Luxury fashion line, curated e-commerce store, Maybach Foundation, historical car register, and the forthcoming Maybach Museum.

The Challenge

The Problem

When the House of Maybach approached Flynaut, the existing website had grown organically over several years into a collection of disconnected experiences. The Maybach store operated on one design language. The heritage content lived in another. The Mercedes-Maybach partnership section felt like a third, entirely separate property. Navigation was disorienting. Mobile performance was poor. Page load times exceeded seven seconds on key landing pages — a number unacceptable for any brand, let alone one that sells silk scarves at four figures and leather goods that rival Hermes.

The core challenge was deceptively simple to articulate and extraordinarily difficult to execute: unify a century of heritage, a modern luxury lifestyle brand, a functioning e-commerce operation, and a cultural preservation mission into a single, cohesive digital experience that loads fast, converts browsers into buyers, and feels like stepping into a Maybach showroom.

Flynaut assembled a cross-functional team spanning UX research, visual design, front-end architecture, WordPress engineering, and e-commerce strategy. The engagement unfolded across four distinct phases over fourteen weeks.

Discovery & Brand Immersion

2 weeks

Before a single wireframe was sketched, our team spent two weeks immersing ourselves in the Maybach universe. We studied the original Maybach Motorenbau design philosophy from the 1920s. We analyzed how competing heritage luxury brands handle the tension between historical preservation and contemporary commerce. We conducted stakeholder interviews with Foundation leadership, the e-commerce team, and Mercedes-Benz brand partnership managers.

Maybach.com visitors fall into four distinct persona groups with fundamentally different intent patterns — collectors, luxury consumers, cultural patrons, and Mercedes-Maybach enthusiasts.

Information Architecture & UX

3 weeks

We restructured the entire site around a 'rooms in a mansion' metaphor. The homepage became the Lobby. Visitors enter distinct rooms based on intent: the Penthouse for experiential luxury, the Gallery for vehicles, the Atelier for the store, the Archive for heritage content, and the Salon for the Foundation.

A persistent 'concierge' navigation element replaced traditional mega-menus. On mobile, gesture-driven navigation inspired by luxury hotel apps replaced the hamburger menu convention.

Technical Architecture & Build

6 weeks

We preserved WordPress as the CMS while rebuilding the front-end using a headless architecture with Next.js. The e-commerce integration included high-resolution lazy-loaded imagery, 360-degree product rotation, and a checkout flow mirroring the brand's white-glove purchasing experience. For the Car Register, we built a filterable, searchable archive with provenance records and timeline-based navigation.

Headless WordPress gave full control over performance and bespoke interactions without forcing the client to abandon familiar content workflows.

Performance Optimization & Launch

3 weeks

Image delivery moved to a responsive CDN pipeline serving WebP and AVIF formats with automatic quality adjustment. Critical CSS was inlined. JavaScript bundles were code-split by route. Web fonts were subset to only used glyphs, reducing font payload by 73%.

Average page load time dropped from 7.2 seconds to 1.8 seconds. Lighthouse performance scores improved from 34 to 94.

The pages-per-session metric deserves particular attention. Moving from 2.1 to 4.7 pages per visit validates the 'rooms in a mansion' navigation philosophy. Visitors are not bouncing after a single page; they are exploring — moving from the Penthouse to the Store, from the Car Register to the Foundation.

Reflections

What This Project Taught Us

Heritage luxury brands present a design challenge that commodity SaaS websites never encounter: every aesthetic choice must be justified against a hundred years of brand equity. You cannot A/B test your way to a design language for a brand that predates the internet by seven decades.

Headless WordPress remains an underutilized architecture for brands that need editorial flexibility and front-end sophistication simultaneously. The Maybach editorial team was publishing new content within hours of launch without any retraining.

Performance is a luxury feature. For brands operating at this tier, a slow website is not just a conversion problem — it is a brand integrity problem. Every millisecond of load time communicates something about the brand's standards.
